Educational Activities
All GP Specialist Training Registrars (GPStR) in all 3 years of the programme are expected to maintain an e-portfolio of learning and assessment obtained by registering with the Royal College of General Practitioners.
In hospital posts, every GP trainee has a Clinical Supervisor (usually their consultant) who supports learning and may do some of the assessments required by the e-portfolio, and, of course, the Clinical Supervisor’s Report at the end of the post. In GP-based posts they will have their personal GP Trainer instead.
Every GP trainee will also have an Educational Supervisor (a GP Programme Director or Trainer) who will keep an overview of the trainee’s progress.
GP registrars enjoy protected private study time each week as well as a weekly tutorial with their trainer and half-day-release seminars with other GP trainees on the scheme.
All GP trainees meet together in weekly half-day-release seminars during academic term times. Those in the ENT, Palliative Care, Care of the Elderly, Psychiatry and O+G posts should be released to attend these seminars. Those in Paediatric and A+E posts participate in weekly educational meetings within their own hospital departments and usually cannot attend this half-day programme.
Twice each year there is a two day residential course (usually held in a very nice country house in Surrey) for all GP trainees. The aim of the residential course is for participants to get to know each other and to explore important issues in General Practice relevant to their stage in training.
In addition to the above, study leave is available in each post to attend courses (e.g. Family Planning, ENT, Ophthalmology, MRCGP) or to do additional exams such as the DRCOG.
